The baker

Trained to be exact. Driven to experiment.

Luke Richards is a trained pastry chef. He learned his craft in Australia under a German baker and an Austrian pastry chef, in the European tradition: exact measurements, patient technique, and a deep respect for the history behind every method. He also learned which flavours belong together, and which ones draw the best out of each other, from many regions of the world.

That training travels with him into Flour & Obsidian, along with an appreciation for the history and refinement of the craft. Technique comes first, then invention: couverture chocolate, Medjool dates, fragrant spices, and flavours that reward a second taste. Each bake is made to order and finished by hand.

Run an independent coffee shop? Let Luke bake for you. Weekly drop-offs of bakes made to the same standard as everything else, with volume pricing.

    Orders start at a batch of 10 to 20 of each bake you choose, delivered every week. Larger weekly orders are always welcome.

    Every bake on the menu suits a café counter. Custom cakes are supplied whole, ready for you to slice and serve.

    Imagine a bake that only your café serves. Luke, a trained pastry chef, works with you from the first idea to the finished bake, developing a signature that belongs to your counter and no one else’s.

    Serving cafés around BH6 and neighbouring postcodes. Volume pricing is agreed on enquiry.

How much notice do you need?

A week is typical. Larger orders, or orders that use rarer ingredients, may need longer.

How much do the bakes cost?

Pricing is quoted per order, because it depends on the bake and the quantity. Custom cakes start from £40, and volume pricing is available for larger orders.

Do you deliver?

Collection is available from the BH6 area of Bournemouth. Delivery can be arranged for a fee.

How will I know what is in each bake?

Every box includes a card that says what the bake is and lists its allergens, and we confirm allergens in writing with every order. Bakes are made to order and ingredients can vary, so please tell us about any allergy when you enquire.

Can I choose what goes in my bake?

Sometimes. Rocky Road is made with three or four additions of your choosing, and custom cakes are designed around you. For anything else, ask and we will tell you what is possible.

Is there a minimum order?

Minimums vary by bake, so we agree them with you when you enquire.

Do you supply cafés?

Yes. Weekly drop-offs start at a batch of 10 to 20 of each bake, with larger orders welcome, around BH6 and neighbouring postcodes. Choose “A café or business” in the form and we will talk through what suits you.

Where are you based?

In Bournemouth. There is no shopfront. Everything is baked to order and ordered online.
